Build a more resilient future.
For people who notice waste everywhere they look, and want to measure it before they try to fix it. Green jobs across energy, agriculture and the built environment, and what they really involve.
20–22 Dec 2026Kuala Lumpur
You might like this if…
- you've switched off the lights and fans your classmates left on, more than once
- you've been part of a recycling drive, a river clean-up or a school garden
- you've wondered where all the rubbish goes after a kenduri or a school carnival
Tasks, not job titles
What the work is actually made of
Every job is a bundle of tasks. Here are six from this area. Try sorting them: which would you hand to AI?
Count where a building wastes energy and water
Lights on in empty rooms, a dripping tap, air-conditioning set too cold: you tally what you see instead of guessing.
Collect water or soil samples in the field
You pack boots, gloves and labelled bottles, and the weather decides how your day goes.
Read a site's energy and water bills
You find the spikes, match them to what happened that week and ask the people who were there.
Write up what you measured and found
You say what you measured, what you found and how sure you are, because someone will act on it.
Advise a farmer on a new way of growing
You visit the plot, listen first and fit the idea to their land, budget and season.
Persuade people to change a habit
The best improvement fails if nobody uses it, so you explain, ask what gets in the way and try again.
0 of 6 sorted
On Day 1 you do this for real with a job you choose, then a practitioner tells you where you were wrong.
Skills you practise
- Systems thinking
- Field research
- Data
Who does this work
People you could meet
Practitioners are confirmed for each cohort. These are the kinds of roles in this area and what a day involves.
Sustainability analyst
Gathers energy, water and waste figures from a company's sites, checks they're right, and suggests changes managers can actually afford.
Environmental scientist
Splits the week between fieldwork, taking samples from rivers or soil, and the lab and desk, testing them and writing up what they mean.
Agritech specialist
Visits farms to set up sensors, drones or new growing systems, checks the data they send back and helps farmers decide what to change.

Questions worth asking them
- “How much of your week is in the field, and how much is at a desk with data?”
- “What do you do when the data is messy or the answer is uncertain?”
- “Which jobs do sensors, drones or AI already do in your work, and how do you check them?”

Day 2 · the taster
Where you try it
- Your task
- Audit the resources or waste in a space and propose three improvements.
- Halfway through
- the building manager says there's no money for new equipment this year. Which of your improvements still work if only people's habits can change?
You leave with the work you made, what you changed and why, linked to your Future Map.
Routes and money
How people get in, and what it pays
Routes in
- 01Degree in environmental science
- 02TVET green skills
- 03Startup roles
What each route asks for
- For the 2026/27 intake, a polytechnic or community college diploma needed three SPM credits and a pass in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah.
- ADTEC JTM Kuala Lumpur's three-phase wiring course (SKM Level 3, 24 months) asks for SPM passes in Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah, Mathematics and one science or technical subject. Tuition, hostel and meals are free.
- Only electricians licensed by the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) may connect a solar system's inverter to the electricity supply, SEDA says.
- UMK's environmental sustainability degree takes eight semesters. It accepts STPM, matrikulasi or asasi with a CGPA of 2.00, or a skills diploma (DKM, DLKM or DVM) with 2.50.
- UP_TVET applications for the January 2027 intake close on 16 November 2026.
- Kementerian Pendidikan Tinggi (BKPA, Jabatan Pendidikan Tinggi), Pekeliling Kemasukan ke UA, Politeknik, Kolej Komuniti dan MARA BPT bagi Lepasan SPM Sesi Akademik 2026/2027 (2026)
- UP_TVET, Portal Rasmi TVET MADANI, Sijil Teknologi Elektrik Pendawaian Tiga Fasa (SMET03), ADTEC JTM Kampus Kuala Lumpur: UP_TVET course page (2026)
- Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia, SEDA Malaysia Grid-Connected Photovoltaic (PV) Systems Design Course DNS26-03 (2026)
- Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Program Pengajian dan Syarat Khas Kemasukan UMK (SPM dan STPM/Setaraf) 2026 (2026)
- UP_TVET, Portal Rasmi TVET MADANI, UP_TVET Perdana: Maklumat Ambilan Siri Perdana 1/2027 (2026)
What it costs and pays
On Day 3 you price each route, compare how long it takes and look up first pay from official sources (the Graduate Tracer Study and DOSM). Sourced figures for this area appear here once the First Move team has reviewed them.
AI and this work
What AI is changing, and what it isn't
Examples to argue with, not forecasts. On Day 1 you test them against a practitioner.
AI can help
Drafting a pollution or energy report: AI spots patterns, you check the data and sign off.
Might be automated
Running the number work behind a weather or flood forecast.
Still needs a person
Taking samples from a river or a farm and noticing what looks wrong.
New work
Checking sensor, drone and satellite data before anyone decides anything on it.
What the evidence says
- Malaysia had 31% installed renewable energy capacity by December 2025, the Deputy Prime Minister said in April 2026 (Bernama report).
- The National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) targets 40% renewable energy by 2035 and 70% by 2050, and estimates about 310,000 green job opportunities by 2050. Government targets, not outcomes.
- The ILO scores environmental protection professionals and environmental engineers at 0.38 out of 1, and environmental health inspectors at 0.24 ("not exposed"). Global generative-AI task-exposure estimates; not a Malaysian forecast; not a job-security rating.
- World Economic Forum (WEF) employers put environmental engineers and renewable energy engineers among the fastest-growing jobs to 2030. Global employer expectation, published 2025.
- Bernama, Malaysia targets 32 per cent installed renewable energy capacity this year -- Fadillah (2026-04-21)
