Key facts
For the 2026/27 intake, a polytechnic or community college diploma needed three SPM credits and a pass in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah.[1] ADTEC JTM Kuala Lumpur's three-phase wiring course (SKM Level 3, 24 months) asks for SPM passes in Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah, Mathematics and one science or technical subject. Tuition, hostel and meals are free.[2] Only electricians licensed by the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) may connect a solar system's inverter to the electricity supply, SEDA says.[3] UMK's environmental sustainability degree takes eight semesters. It accepts STPM, matrikulasi or asasi with a CGPA of 2.00, or a skills diploma (DKM, DLKM or DVM) with 2.50.[4] UP_TVET applications for the January 2027 intake close on 16 November 2026.[5]
Environment & Sustainability is the career area for people who want to work on energy, water, waste, food and nature. First Move describes it as green jobs across energy, agriculture and the built environment, and what they really involve. Much of the work happens on roofs, farms, riverbanks and plant rooms, and several routes in start with a technical skill such as wiring or farm automation rather than a degree.
For named programmes, institutions and sponsors, see Where to study Environment & Sustainability in Malaysia, and who funds it.
What the work actually is
Job titles here are vague. A "sustainability executive" at a bank and one at a palm oil mill have very different weeks, so look at the tasks instead. Tasks, not job titles shows how to break a job down.
| Role | What a normal week involves | A usual way in |
|---|---|---|
| Solar PV technician | Measuring roofs, mounting panels, running the cabling on the panel side, testing the system and logging faults. A licensed electrician makes the final connection to the building's supply.[3] | SKM or diploma in electrical work or solar PV |
| Electrician (wireman) | Wiring and testing buildings and machines, tracing faults and repairing them, working to Energy Commission standards.[2] | SKM wiring course |
| Smart-farming technician | Installing soil and humidity sensors, fitting fertigation pipes and pumps, and checking the controller when readings look wrong.[6] | Short TVET course, then SKM or a diploma |
| Agriculture officer or agronomist | Visiting farms, checking crops for pests and disease, advising on irrigation and fertiliser, and writing up field trials. | Diploma or degree in agriculture or agrotechnology |
| Environmental lab technician | Preparing water, soil or air samples, running tests, recording results and keeping equipment calibrated. | Diploma in science or environmental technology |
| Environmental officer | Taking samples at a factory or building site, comparing results with permit limits, writing compliance reports and briefing managers. | Degree in environmental science |
| Sustainability executive or analyst | Collecting energy, water and waste figures from bills and meters, preparing sustainability and carbon reports, and persuading teams to change habits. | Degree in environmental science, engineering or business |
| Building or facilities technician | Keeping air-conditioning, lighting and water systems running efficiently, logging energy use and fixing faults. | SKM or diploma in electrical or mechanical work |
| Conservation or forestry officer | Surveying plants and animals, monitoring a forest or coastline, working with local communities and writing reports. | Degree in natural resources or forestry |
These are typical weeks, not guarantees: the same title can mean more office time at one employer and more fieldwork at another. UMK lists environmental officer, environmental consultant, environmental lab executive and sustainability executive among the jobs its environmental sustainability graduates go into.[4]
Routes in after SPM
Here are four real programmes and what they asked for on their official pages in 2026. Each one stands for a whole route.
| Route | Example programme | What it asks for | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| TVET skills certificate (SKM) | Sijil Teknologi Elektrik Pendawaian Tiga Fasa, ADTEC JTM Kuala Lumpur | Age 17 to 35. SPM passes in Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah, Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, and one of Science, Additional Science, Physics, Chemistry or a listed technical subject[2] | 24 months |
| Short TVET course | Automasi Pertanian (IoT smart farming), ADTEC JTM Kangar | Age 17 to 45. No formal qualification needed if you can read and write[6] | 3 months |
| Community college diploma | Diploma Teknologi Solar Fotovoltan, Kolej Komuniti Segamat 2 | No extra prerequisites listed on UP_TVET.[7] The general rule for 2026/27 was three SPM credits plus passes in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah[1] | 6 semesters |
| Degree, after matrikulasi, STPM, asasi or a diploma | Sarjana Muda Sains Gunaan (Sains Kelestarian Alam Sekitar), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) | A CGPA of 2.00 in STPM, matrikulasi or asasi (arts-stream STPM also needs at least a D in one of SPM Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Additional Mathematics), a CGPA of 2.00 in a diploma, or 2.50 in a DKM, DLKM or DVM. All routes need MUET Band 2.0[4] | 8 semesters |
The ADTEC wiring course is free to study, with free hostel and meals, RM100 a month in pocket money and RM300 a month during practical training.[2] Fees for the other programmes are on their institutions' pages and in What each route after SPM really costs.
How the routes connect. SKM courses and skills diplomas are TVET (technical and vocational education and training) qualifications, and they are not a dead end: UMK's degree above takes DKM, DLKM and DVM holders.[4] Each pathway has its own guide:
- TVET after SPM and TVET in depth: skills institutes, SKM levels and allowances.
- Diplomas: polytechnic, UiTM, community college or private.
- Matrikulasi, Form 6 and the STPM and Asasi and foundation: bridges to a degree.
Entry rules change every year. Before you apply, check each programme's special requirements (syarat khas) in e-Panduan UPUOnline(opens in a new tab) or on UP_TVET(opens in a new tab).
Licences you may need
Solar and electrical work. SEDA (the Sustainable Energy Development Authority) says only electricians licensed by the Energy Commission may make the connection from a solar inverter to the electricity supply.[3] SEDA's 8-day solar PV design course asked for an age above 21, at least a Diploma in Engineering or a Degree in Applied Science (Physics), and good English for its March to April 2026 run.[3] So for solar, the usual first step is an electrical qualification. Green and semiconductor jobs in Malaysia explains the solar and grid routes, the national energy plans and which green roles employers find hard to fill.
The money, briefly
Pay in green jobs depends more on the industry than on the green label: energy, water and waste, farming and consulting pay differently. The money in Environment & Sustainability has what new science and agriculture graduates earned, with sources, and First salaries by career area puts every area side by side.
How AI is changing it
Hands-on work on roofs, farms, rivers and plant rooms is the part AI touches least, while data analysis and report writing are changing faster. AI and the future of Environment and Sustainability work goes through it task by task, with the evidence and its limits.
Try it now
Before First Move. Start Your Future in Green Jobs, a free Mereka Academy course of about 10 hours on climate change, green jobs and your own skills.[8][9] The library page for the course explains how to sign in.
During First Move. On Day 2, choose the Environment and Sustainability taster: with a staff member, your team audits the energy, water and waste in one part of the venue by counting what you see, checks an AI savings claim, and proposes three improvements you could show worked. If your cohort runs four labs, read the Science and Discovery lab brief or the Build and Engineer lab brief for energy and building roles. Pick three questions from Questions for a practitioner: Science and Discovery, or from Build and Engineer if you meet an energy practitioner.
After First Move. Finish Your Future in Green Jobs, or try Content Creation, a free 5-hour course that teaches content making through green topics, if campaigns appeal to you.[10][11] Free courses for each career area has the full list.
What this means for you
- You do not need a degree to start. Wiring, solar and smart-farming routes begin at SKM or diploma level, and a skills diploma can still lead to a degree later.
- For energy jobs, the electrical qualification usually comes first, because the final solar connection must be made by a licensed electrician.
- If you prefer data and writing to climbing roofs, look at the officer and analyst roles in the table. Those start from a degree, so plan for matrikulasi, STPM, asasi or a diploma first.
- Green is a label, not an employer. A farm, a power company and a consultancy hire for different skills, so ask what the work involves.
- The entry rules here come from 2026 pages. Check them again before you apply.
Your next step
- Before 16 November 2026, search UP_TVET(opens in a new tab) for "fotovolta", "pendawaian" or "pertanian". Open two courses near you and write down the entry rules, the length and any allowance.
- On Day 2, ask the practitioner in the environment taster: "Which part of your week is outdoors, and which part is reports? What did you have to learn after you were hired?"
Choose one course above. Before your 30-day check-in, try the first section and save one learning example in Future Map. At your 90-day check-in, decide whether to continue or switch. Read the course guide for access, age and availability notes.
