The figures, at a glance
After SPM there is no single "right" next step. There are many routes, and most of them can lead to a good job, a degree, or both. They differ in how long they take, what they cost, who can get in, and how you learn. This page puts them side by side. Each route has its own guide in the library with more detail.
The routes at a glance
Figures are the latest published ones we found in October 2026, each for the year shown. Costs are study costs only. Food, transport and housing come on top, and where a figure is missing it is unknown, not zero.
| Route | General entry rule | Length | Study cost (published example) | Leads to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Form 6 (STPM) | Credit in SPM BM; aged 17 to 20 on 1 January[1] | 1.5 years[1] | Exam fees waived for 5 subjects at government schools[1] | Degree via UPU[2] |
| Matrikulasi KPM | Current SPM candidate, aged 20 or under, stream minimum grades[3] | 1 year (Science also 2 years)[3] | Free tuition and hostel; RM2,500 a year aid if eligible[3] | Degree via UPU[2] |
| Public Asasi | 5 credits including BM, pass in Sejarah (2026/27)[4] | 1 year[5] | Varies by university; check its fee sheet | Degree, often at the same university[2] |
| Private foundation | Set by each college | 1 year (Taylor's)[6] | MYR 31,600 (Taylor's, 2026)[6] | Degree, often with the same provider |
| Diploma (polytechnic, community college, university) | 3 credits plus BM and Sejarah rules (2026/27)[4] | 2.5 to 3 years, some 2[7] | RM200 a semester at polytechnics (2023/24)[8] | Work, or a degree via UPU[2] |
| TVET skills course (SKM) | Varies; some need no formal qualification[9] | For example 15 or 24 months[10][9] | Often free, sometimes with a small allowance[9] | Work, higher skills levels, or a diploma[2] |
| International pre-U (A-Level, AUSMAT, IB, CIMP) | Set by each college | 15 to 17 months (Taylor's A Level)[11] | MYR 35,453 to 47,054 (Taylor's A Level, 2026)[11] | Universities in Malaysia or abroad[2] |
| Apprenticeship (SLDN) | SPM or PMR leaver chosen by an employer[12] | 1 to 2 years[12] | Employers can claim an RM500 monthly apprentice allowance[12] | Skills certificate plus work experience |
| Straight to work | None by law | Open | You earn: minimum RM1,700 a month since August 2025[13] | Experience; study later |
| Enterprise | Aged 18 or over to register with SSM[14] | Open | SSM registration RM30 to RM60 a year[14] | Your own business |
| Planned gap year | None | Set your own end date | Depends on your plan | Some routes close (see below) |
How the routes connect
Routes are not dead ends. A few examples from the official rules:
- A polytechnic or community college diploma counts as an entry qualification for a degree through UPU.[2]
- A-Level, the IB Diploma, AUSMAT and private foundation are all accepted as UPU entry categories.[2]
- A skills certificate (SKM) alone does not get you into UPU, but a diploma after it, or the higher skills diplomas DKM and DLKM, can.[2]
Who gets in: what to check early
- Specific subjects. Science and engineering streams ask for particular grades in Mathematics, Additional Mathematics and the sciences.[3]
Money, honestly
The cheapest routes to study are Matrikulasi, Form 6, polytechnics and many public TVET courses. Private foundation and international pre-U usually cost tens of thousands of ringgit. A cheap route far from home can still cost more than a pricier one nearby once you add rent and transport. Compare the full picture with the route card in the library.
How to choose without picking a "default"
- Start with what you enjoy doing, not with what sounds impressive. Hands-on? Talking to people? Solving problems on paper?
- List your real constraints: expected grades, family budget, how far you can travel, and whether you can live away from home.
- Keep at least two routes open. For example, apply to UPU and Matrikulasi, and keep TVET as a third option.
- Check every fact at its source and write the date you checked it.
What to do next
- Pick two routes from the table that fit your constraints, and read their guides in the library.
- Fill one route card for each (see "Route card template").
- Note the application dates you must not miss (see "Application dates after SPM").
