Key facts
Politeknik Kota Kinabalu's Diploma in Hotel Management takes 36 months and places students in a designated hotel for ten months of the course.[1] Kolej Komuniti Betong in Sarawak runs a four-semester Certificate in Adventure Tourism; city guide and nature guide are the first jobs it lists.[2] Universiti Malaya's degrees in Japanese, French, German, Spanish and Italian take seven semesters and asked for a CGPA of 3.00 after STPM, matrikulasi or asasi, on UM's entry sheet dated 21 March 2025.[3] In 2026 JPA offered 640 sponsorship places to SPM leavers, including 30 under PPN (leading world universities) and 140 under JKPJ (Japan, Korea, France and Germany).[4] MARA's Young Talent Development Programme (YTP) funds pre-university study in Malaysia or abroad for Bumiputera students with excellent SPM results who pass its assessment, MSAP.[5]
This guide names programmes you can apply to for work that crosses borders: hotels and tourism, events, languages, and moving goods between countries. Every programme below is listed on an official page we read on 23 October 2026: the national TVET course catalogue, a university's own entry document, or UPU's admission circular. For what the jobs involve and what studying abroad really costs, start with Global Opportunities after SPM.
How to use this list
- Degrees come later. The degrees here take students after STPM, matrikulasi, asasi or a diploma, not straight from SPM.
- Durations and requirements are as each institution listed them. They change between intakes, so recheck before you apply.
- Accreditation is your check to make. We did not look these programmes up on the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR) for this guide. Check every programme on your shortlist there before you accept an offer: how to check accreditation.

Who funds study in this area
JPA: sponsorship at home and abroad
JPA (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam, the Public Service Department) runs the main federal sponsorships for SPM leavers. They share some rules: Malaysian citizenship, a first SPM sitting, an age under 19 on 31 December of your SPM year (under 20 for peralihan students), and no other sponsorship at the same level. They are convertible loans based on academic merit (Pinjaman Boleh Ubah), not outright gifts.[17][18]
- Program Penajaan Nasional (PPN). A package from a preparatory course to a first degree at a university in the QS World University Rankings top 20 overall or top 10 for the subject (2026 rules), in open fields of study. It asks for at least 9A+ in listed subjects for engineering, science and technology, or 8A+ for other fields, with at least A- in any other subjects. B40 and M40 families get priority. For 2026 there was no sponsorship to Singapore, and US sponsorship depended on current policy.[17]
- Program Khas Jepun, Korea, Perancis dan Jerman (JKPJ). A preparatory course and then a first degree in Japan, Korea, France or Germany, in engineering, science and technology, or social sciences. The detailed requirements come in each year's guidelines.[18]
- The 2026 round. JPA offered 640 places: 30 PPN, 200 LSPM (degrees in Malaysia), 140 JKPJ and 270 under the Program Khas JPA-MARA, with destinations named including the United States, Australia, Japan, Korea, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Results were out from 19 to 22 June 2026.[4] The 2027 window was not announced on 23 October 2026.[19]
MARA: for Bumiputera students
MARA (Majlis Amanah Rakyat) schemes need you and at least one parent to be Bumiputera citizens.[5][20]
- Young Talent Development Programme (YTP). For excellent current-year SPM results: IB, A-Level, foundation or other pre-university study in Malaysia or abroad, including preparatory programmes for countries where English is not the main language, then a route to the top 10 universities in a country or top 30 in the world for a subject. You must pass MSAP, MARA's assessment, and be 18 in the year you apply. B40 students get priority, and the priority fields include social science and arts and design.[5]
- Tertiary Education Loan (TESP). A loan for a diploma or first degree at MARA-approved institutions in Malaysia, such as a tourism or logistics diploma. Diploma applicants must be under 30.[20]
Diplomas at home
- JPA Dermasiswa B40 (DB40). A grant for diplomas at public universities, polytechnics, TVETMARA and selected skills institutes, in fields that include social science and arts, for families with per-capita income of RM5,249 a month or less. It needs credits in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah plus at least a C in three other subjects.[21] The 2027 window was not announced on 23 October 2026.[19]
- PTPTN and state foundations. See PTPTN basics and scholarships by state.
For how convertible loans are repaid, read scholarships and loans. For whether your family qualifies for aid, read aid eligibility and cash before aid. For overseas costs, see pre-university and international routes.
What this means for you
- A global career can start in Malaysia. The hotel, tourism, events and logistics programmes here run in Sabah, Sarawak, Johor, Melaka and Terengganu, so you may not need to leave your state to begin.
- Overseas sponsorship is narrow. PPN had 30 places in 2026 and asks for 8A+ or 9A+. Apply if you qualify, but build a plan at home alongside it.
- A language widens both routes. A degree in Japanese, French or German is one way in, and JKPJ sends SPM leavers to those same countries. They are different routes with different entry points.
- Convertible loans carry conditions. JPA's sponsorships are loans that can be converted based on your results, so read the repayment rules before you sign.
- MARA schemes are for Bumiputera students; JPA's ask for Malaysian citizenship, not Bumiputera status. Check which ones you can apply for before you plan around them.
Your next step
- Shortlist three programmes on different routes, for example IKBN Kemasik's front-office SKM, Politeknik Metro Betong's tourism diploma and UMK's tourism degree. Open each listing, write down what it asks for, and find it on the MQR (how to check).
- Watch one funding window: JPA's SPM-leaver sponsorships (PPN, JKPJ, LSPM and the JPA-MARA programme). The 2027 window was not announced on 23 October 2026, so check the JPA sponsorship portal(opens in a new tab) weekly from the month SPM results come out.
