Key facts

  • For the 2026/27 intake, a polytechnic or community college certificate needed one SPM credit and a diploma needed three, plus passes in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah.[1]
  • Politeknik Jeli Kelantan's Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Green Energy) takes six semesters and lists energy officer, assistant energy auditor and solar installer among its jobs.[2]
  • Institut Pertanian Sarawak (Semongok) and Institut Pertanian Sabah each run a 24-month Sijil Pertanian with no extra course prerequisites listed.[3][4]
  • JPA's DB40 grant pays for diplomas at public universities, polytechnics, TVETMARA, IKTBN and ADTEC for families with per-capita income of RM5,249 a month or less. The 2026 round ran from 3 to 16 August 2026.[5][6]
  • UP_TVET applications for the Siri 1/2027 intake at public skills institutes close on 16 November 2026.[7]

This guide names programmes you can apply to, from a farming certificate to an environmental degree. Every programme below is listed on an official page we read on 23 October 2026: the national TVET course catalogue, a university's own entry book, or UPU's admission circular. For what the jobs involve week to week, start with Environment & Sustainability after SPM.

How to use this list

  • Where you apply depends on the institution. Polytechnic and community college places for SPM leavers go through UPU, the central admissions system.[1] Skills institutes such as ADTEC and IKTBN take applications through UP_TVET.[7][8]
  • Degrees come later. The degrees here take students after STPM, matrikulasi, asasi or a diploma, not straight from SPM.
  • Durations and requirements are as each institution listed them. They change between intakes, so treat them as a starting point and recheck before you apply.
  • Accreditation is your check to make. We did not look these programmes up on the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR) for this guide. Check every programme on your shortlist there before you accept an offer: how to check accreditation.

Programmes to look at, by route

Skills certificates (TVET, SKM)

SKM is the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia, the national skills certificate.

  • ADTEC JTM Kampus Kuala Lumpur: Sijil Teknologi Elektrik Pendawaian Tiga Fasa (SKM Level 3, 24 months). Wiring is the base skill for solar work. It asks for an age of 17 to 35 and SPM passes in Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah, Mathematics and one science or technical subject. The listing says tuition, accommodation and meals are free, though the UP_TVET catalogue shows a RM750 registration fee. UP_TVET listing(opens in a new tab)[8][9]
  • Institut Pertanian Sarawak, Semongok: Sijil Pertanian (SKM Level 3, 24 months). About 70% practical work, with a choice of six specialisations, including food crops, estate management and farm mechanisation. No extra course prerequisites are listed. TVET listing(opens in a new tab)[3]
  • Institut Pertanian Sabah: Sijil Pertanian (SKM Level 3, 24 months). The same certificate in Sabah, with jobs listed such as assistant agricultural officer, farm supervisor and seed production supervisor. Ask the institute how and when to apply. TVET listing(opens in a new tab)[4]
  • IKTBN Bukit Mertajam, Penang: Sijil Teknologi Elektrik (Pemasangan Solar) (6 months). A second step, not a first one: it asks for an electrical wiring certificate from Suruhanjaya Tenaga (the Energy Commission) or the Department of Skills Development (JPK), an age of 17 to 30, and single status. UP_TVET listing(opens in a new tab)[10]

Certificates and diplomas (polytechnics and community colleges)

  • Kolej Komuniti Tambunan, Sabah: Certificate in Agrotechnology (4 semesters). Jobs listed include agricultural technical assistant, lab assistant and farm supervisor. TVET listing(opens in a new tab)[11]
  • Kolej Komuniti Segamat 2, Johor: Diploma in Solar Photovoltaic Technology (30 months). It covers single- and three-phase wiring and electricity supply law, and lists solar PV technician and PV system design assistant among its jobs. TVET listing(opens in a new tab)[12]
  • Politeknik Jeli Kelantan: Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Green Energy) (6 semesters). On top of the general rule, it asks for a pass in English and credits in Mathematics and one science, technical or vocational subject. Politeknik Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan lists the same diploma at 36 months. Jeli listing(opens in a new tab), Port Dickson listing(opens in a new tab)[2][13]
  • Politeknik Sandakan, Sabah: Diploma in Agrotechnology (6 semesters). Jobs listed include tissue-culture lab technologist, assistant agricultural officer and cadet planter. TVET listing(opens in a new tab)[14]
  • Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah, Selangor: Diploma in Environmental Engineering (36 months). Jobs listed include assistant environmental officer, environmental quality control assistant and lab technician. TVET listing(opens in a new tab)[15]

For these, the UPU e-Panduan(opens in a new tab) holds each programme's entry rules once the 2027/28 listing is up, and the UPU timeline shows how the last cycle ran.

Degrees (public universities, through UPU)

  • UMK (Jeli, Kelantan): Sarjana Muda Sains Gunaan (Sains Kelestarian Alam Sekitar) (UPU code UL6422001, 8 semesters). Careers listed include Department of Environment officer, environmental consultant and sustainability executive.[16]
  • UMK: Ijazah Sarjana Muda Sains Gunaan (Sains Sumber Asli) (UL6850001, 8 semesters, including a year of industrial training). The conservation option: careers listed include PERHILITAN (wildlife department) officer, biodiversity consultant and conservation executive.[16]
  • Both UMK degrees ask for a CGPA of at least 2.00 after STPM, matrikulasi, asasi or a diploma (2.50 for a skills diploma: DKM, DLKM or DVM) and MUET Band 2.0, according to UMK's 2026 entry book. UMK entry book (PDF)(opens in a new tab)[16]
  • UMPSA (Pekan, Pahang): Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Energy & Environmental) with Honours (48 months). For holders of STPM, matrikulasi, asasi or a related diploma. Jobs listed include energy auditor, energy manager and environmental auditor. TVET listing(opens in a new tab)[17]
  • UTHM Kampus Cawangan Pagoh, Johor: Bachelor of Civil Engineering Technology (Environment) with Honours (48 months). Jobs listed include environmental engineer, pollution control engineer and water supply engineer. TVET listing(opens in a new tab)[18]

This list sticks to public institutions. If you look at a private college, ask for the full fees in writing and find the programme on the MQR before you pay a deposit.

Who funds study in this area

Few sponsors fund "the environment" as a field. Most help depends on your level of study, your institution and your family's income, so look for funding that fits those.

Federal grants and loans

  • JPA Dermasiswa B40 (DB40). A grant, not a loan, for diplomas (including TVET diplomas) at public universities, polytechnics, TVETMARA, IKTBN and ADTEC, in fields that include science, engineering and technical study. You need per-capita family income of RM5,249 a month or less, a first SPM sitting, an age under 19 on 31 December of your SPM year (under 20 for peralihan students), credits in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah plus at least a C in three other subjects (one other subject at TVETMARA and skills institutes), and an offer from the institution.[5] The 2026 round ran from 3 to 16 August 2026.[6] The 2027 window was not announced on 23 October 2026.[19]
  • MARA Tertiary Education Loan (TESP). A loan for a diploma or first degree at MARA-approved institutions in Malaysia. You and at least one parent must be Bumiputera citizens, diploma applicants must be under 30, and B40 and M40 families get priority.[20] MARA's page shows no application dates: the 2027 window was not announced on 23 October 2026.[20]
  • PTPTN, the national study loan, covers approved courses at many of these institutions. See PTPTN basics before you borrow.

Support built into public skills courses

  • ADTEC KL's wiring course lists free tuition, accommodation and meals, RM100 a month in pocket money and RM300 a month during practical training.[8]
  • IKTBN Bukit Mertajam's solar course lists a RM100 monthly allowance, RM300 during industrial training, and accommodation and meals.[10]

State foundations

  • Yayasan Sarawak technical training loan (Biasiswa Pinjaman Latihan Teknikal). For anak jati Sarawak (at least one Sarawakian parent) aged 16 to 30 who train full time at a skills or technical institute on its panel. It pays training fees up to RM10,000 a year, gives priority to those who could not go on to higher education, and repayment starts six months after training ends.[21] Applications are online; the page did not show a closing date on 23 October 2026.
  • Other states have their own loans and scholarships. See scholarships by state.

SEDA's own training (for qualified wiremen)

SEDA, the Sustainable Energy Development Authority, runs a five-day Grid-Connected Photovoltaic course for wiremen and chargemen, with theory, practical work and a competency exam at the end. Its page listed a registration fee of RM2,400 before SST, with 2026 runs up to December 2026 at providers including TNB ILSAS, UniKL BMI and TVETMARA Sri Gading. No 2027 dates were listed on 23 October 2026.[22] This is a course you pay for, not a scholarship, so ask your institute or employer whether they will cover it.

For the bigger picture, read scholarships and loans and aid eligibility and cash before aid.

What this means for you

  • Green work has more than one door. A wiring SKM, a farming certificate and an environmental degree all lead into this area.
  • Solar is a ladder. The solar-specific courses here are for people who already wire: IKTBN asks for a wiring certificate, and SEDA's course is for wiremen and chargemen. A wiring SKM or an electrical diploma is the first rung.
  • You can start near home in Sabah and Sarawak. Institut Pertanian Sarawak, Institut Pertanian Sabah, Kolej Komuniti Tambunan and Politeknik Sandakan are all on this list.
  • Funding follows your level and income more than your field. DB40 is the one grant here for diplomas. MARA, PTPTN and Yayasan Sarawak offer loans you repay.
  • Rules move every intake. UMK's requirements come from its 2026 entry book and the TVET listings can change, so recheck each one before you apply.

Your next step

  1. Shortlist three programmes on different routes, for example ADTEC KL's wiring SKM, Politeknik Jeli's green energy diploma and UMK's environmental sustainability degree. Open each listing, write down what it asks for, and find it on the MQR (how to check).
  2. Watch one funding window: JPA's DB40. The 2026 round opened in August, so if you sit SPM in 2026, check the JPA sponsorship portal(opens in a new tab) weekly from July 2027. That month comes from the 2026 timing, not from an announcement.
