SPM results day: what to do in the first two weeks
What to do when SPM results arrive, whether they are better or worse than you hoped, you miss a requirement, get no offer or an offer you do not want: the official sequence, last cycle's dates and what you lose if you miss each window.

Results day starts a run of short windows. Some close within a week, and missing one can cost you a place or a year. If you are sitting SPM 2026 now, your 2027 dates have not been announced, so this guide uses the last cycle's official dates (SPM 2025 results, 2026 intakes) to show the order things happen in and how much time you get.
Key facts
SPM 2025 results came out on 31 March 2026. School candidates collected them at school from 10 am, and the online slip was available until 6 pm on 6 April.[1] In 2026 the UPU application for SPM leavers stayed open until 12 April, twelve days after results, so you could still change your choices.[2] Only students with no offer, or with only a community college certificate offer, can appeal through UPU, and only within ten days of the results.[4] In 2026, 169,803 SPM 2025 leavers (72.11% of 235,480 eligible applications) were offered a place through UPU, so close to 3 in 10 eligible applicants were not.[5]
Your 2027 dates are not out yet
SPM 2026 written papers run from 23 November to 17 December 2026.[7] By 23 October 2026 the results date had not been announced, and the UPU portal still showed only 2026/27 documents.[6] Last cycle's results came on 31 March, but do not plan around that date.
From January 2027, check upu.mohe.gov.my(opens in a new tab) and moe.gov.my(opens in a new tab) every week. UPU's official channels also include the UPUPocket app and BKPA UPU on social media.[2]
Results day: the first 48 hours
- Get your slip. School candidates collect it at school. Private candidates (calon persendirian) get results through the State Education Department (JPN) where they registered. Save the PDF from myresultspm.moe.gov.my while the site is open.[1]
- Work out your UPU merit score with the merit calculator in e-Panduan(opens in a new tab) or UPUPocket. It is 90% academic results and 10% co-curricular.[2]
- Check every choice against its requirements (syarat am and syarat khas) in e-Panduan. UPU does not filter out programmes whose special requirements you miss, so checking is your job.[4]
- Write the open windows and their closing dates somewhere your family can see them, using the tables below.
The sequence, one row per event: results to offers
Dates are from the last cycle we could confirm on an official page. They show the order and the gaps, not your 2027 deadlines.
| What happens (last cycle) | Who it applies to | What to do | What you lose if you miss it | Where to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPM results: 31 March 2026; online slip until 6 April, 6 pm[1] | Everyone | Collect your slip; work out your merit | The online slip closes after a week; after that, go through your school or JPN | myresultspm.moe.gov.my(opens in a new tab) |

| SPM Ulangan (re-sit) 2026: Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah and Mathematics, 14 to 16 July; results 20 August[17][18] | Students who need a better result in those subjects | Ask your school or JPN early how and when to register | That sitting; and note that UPU does not count SPMU for SPM-leaver applications[2] | lp.moe.gov.my(opens in a new tab) |
| TVET Perdana January 2027 intake: apply 1 October to 16 November 2026; offers 17 to 27 November; accept 30 November to 6 December; appeals 7 December 2026 to 26 January 2027[19] | Applicants for full-time skills training | Apply on UP_TVET | That intake; the next is July | mohon.tvet.gov.my(opens in a new tab) |
If your results are better than you expected
- Use the time before UPU closes. Move programmes you now qualify for up your list, and resubmit.
- Programmes with interviews or tests can only go in choices 1 to 4 (education programmes in choices 1 and 2).[4]
If your results are what you expected
- UPU only offers you a programme from your own list (unless you agree to an outside offer on appeal), so fill all twelve choices with programmes you would actually attend.[4]
- Look at past demand in the UPU dashboard ("trend permohonan dan tawaran") before you settle the order.[2]
If your results are lower than you expected
- Recalculate your merit and rebuild your list so that several choices are programmes where you clearly meet the requirements. Selection runs on merit, requirements, places left and the order of your choices.[4]
- Lower results still leave routes open. In 2026/27, a polytechnic diploma needed three credits plus passes in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah, and a community college certificate needed one credit plus the same two passes.[4]
- If you think a grade is wrong, ask your school or JPN on results day whether a re-check (semakan semula) is open, what it costs and when it closes. We could not confirm the current rules on an official page on 23 October 2026, so we have not printed them here.
If you missed a subject requirement
- SPM Ulangan (SPMU) lets you re-sit Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah and Mathematics. In 2026 it was held in July, with results in August.[17][18] UPU does not count an SPMU result for SPM-leaver applications. It counts only later, for degree entry under the STPM or equivalent category.[2] Before you register, ask the institution you are aiming for how it will treat an SPMU result.
- Skills training through UP_TVET is open to people aged 18 and over (some courses take 16-year-olds), and you can apply with SKM Level 3 instead of SPM. Each course sets its own requirements.[10] See TVET after SPM.
If you get no offer
- You are not alone: in 2026 close to 3 in 10 eligible SPM-leaver applications through UPU did not lead to an offer.[5]
- Appeal within the ten days. You choose up to four programmes from those with places left.[4]
- Run other routes at the same time: TVET Perdana (January and July intakes)[9], the polytechnic and community college direct intake[16], and private colleges, which you apply to directly. If you do not fit a UPU category, public universities, polytechnics and community colleges also take direct applications.[2]
- Next year you can still apply through UPU as a non-current SPM leaver (Category B covers SPM from the two previous years), with fewer programmes open to you.[2] If you take a year out, read work, apprenticeship or a gap year first.
If you get an offer you do not want
- Decide inside the nine days. If you decline, or simply do not answer, you cannot appeal, and offers are final.[4]
- Before you decline, make sure another offer is confirmed in writing.
- Work out what is wrong: the subject, the place or the cost. A cost problem may have an answer in scholarships and loans; a subject problem may not.
What may change for 2027: announced, not yet in force
In January 2026 the government said Form 6 would move from KPM to the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), with a target of 2027.[21] In February 2026 the Higher Education Minister announced a "single window, single offer" system that would merge applications for matriculation, asasi and Form 6, and said KPT expected to run matriculation intake from 2027, after amending laws including the Education Act 1996.[22] On 23 October 2026 we found no official notice explaining how 2027 applications will work. Until there is one, use the 2026 process above as a guide to the order of events.
Registration: documents and money to have ready
Registration usually needs paperwork and payment before the day. As one example, Kolej Komuniti Bayan Baru's guide for Session I 2026/2027 asked new students to send the acceptance form within 14 days of the offer letter and to pay RM200 tuition, RM50 for student activities and welfare, RM40 for sports and RM105 for student services online before registering. It also asked for certified copies of the student's MyKad and SPM slip, a health examination report, parents' MyKad copies and recent payslips, a student bank account and four passport photos.[23]
Matriculation students print their own offer letter and registration documents.[8] Every institution sets its own list and fees, so read your offer letter on the day it arrives.
What this means for you
- The tightest deadlines fall in the two weeks after results and the nine days after UPU offers. Plan your family's time around those weeks.
- A lower result or no offer narrows your choices but does not end them: appeals, TVET, the polytechnic direct intake and reapplying as a Category B candidate are all real routes.
- Never let an offer lapse by accident. Silence counts as a decline, and a declined offer cannot be appealed.
Your next step
- Before results day, write down, in order, the routes you would accept (your UPU choices, matriculation, Form 6, TVET), and agree with a parent or guardian who checks which portal. The UPU and application dates guide lists each portal.
- From January 2027, check upu.mohe.gov.my(opens in a new tab) and moe.gov.my(opens in a new tab) every week, and put each new date in a shared family calendar the day it is announced.
