Form 6 and the STPM: the low-cost route to a degree

What Form 6 (STPM) is, who can enter, what it costs (including the RM2,500 allowance announced in Budget 2027), how it leads to a degree, and the trade-offs to weigh.

Form 6 (Tingkatan Enam) is where you study for the STPM, the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia. It runs in secondary schools and Form 6 colleges, so for many people it is the closest pre-university option to home. It is not a "back-up" route. It is a full pre-university qualification that leads to a degree.

What it is

  • Length: 1.5 years, split into three semesters.[1]
  • Subjects: combinations of science and social science subjects, including Economics and Business. More than 20 subjects are offered across the country, but each centre offers its own set.[1]
  • Recognition: the government portal says the STPM is equivalent to A-Level, is recognised by Cambridge Assessment International Education, and is accepted by the Public Service Department (JPA) for public service posts.[1]
  • Who runs it: in July 2026 the Prime Minister said Form 6 stays under the Ministry of Education (KPM) for now, and that this could be reviewed after some years.[2]

Who can enter

For 2026, the general rules on the government portal are:[1]

  • a credit (kepujian) or better in Bahasa Melayu in SPM, and
  • an age of 17 to 20 on 1 January of the year you enter.

Each subject combination also has its own special requirements (syarat khas). The portal does not list them, so ask your school or check the Form 6 system. If you meet the general and special requirements, you are offered a place automatically. Offers and the "Mohon Tingkatan 6" link are on sst6.moe.gov.my.[1]

What it costs

Form 6 is one of the lowest-cost routes, but it is not cost-free.

  • Exam fees: waived for five subjects for candidates from government and government-aided schools, under Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia (MPM) rules.[1]
  • A new living allowance: in the Budget 2027 speech (9 October 2026), the government said it had agreed to give Form 6 students a living allowance (elaun sara hidup) of RM2,500, the same rate as matriculation students, reaching about 90,000 Form 6 students.[3] The speech does not say when payments start or how they are paid. Ask your school before you count on it.
  • Still unknown: transport, books, uniforms, food and any school fees. No official page we found lists these. Missing data is not zero cost: write "unknown" and ask.

What it leads to

With your STPM results you can apply for a bachelor's degree at a public university through UPUOnline, under the STPM Arts (A) or Science (S) category.[4] For the 2026/27 intake, STPM leavers had two application phases: 29 January to 23 March 2026, and 13 April to 15 May 2026.[4] Private universities set their own entry rules, so check each one.

Honest trade-offs

Upsides

  • Low study cost, often close to home.
  • Recognised for public university entry and public service jobs.
  • A broad mix of subjects if you are not sure yet what to study.

Things to weigh

  • It takes 1.5 years. Matriculation and most Asasi programmes take one year (see those guides), so you may start your degree later than some friends.
  • You need to stay motivated through three semesters with less day-to-day structure than a residential college.
  • Your local centre may not offer the subject combination you want. Travel to another centre changes your costs.

What to do next

  1. Open the MyGOV Tingkatan Enam page and use "Semak senarai kolej/pusat Tingkatan 6" to see which centres near you offer your preferred subjects.
  2. Check your age against the rule: 17 to 20 on 1 January of the year you would start.
  3. Write down what you still do not know (transport, books, the RM2,500 allowance start date) and ask your school counsellor.
