A-Level, AUSMAT, IB and CIMP: when an international pre-U is worth it

What international pre-university programmes cost in 2026 (Taylor's A Level from MYR 35,453), how they compare with free routes, and when they make sense.

International pre-university programmes are taught in English at private colleges and lead to universities in Malaysia and abroad. The main ones are Cambridge A-Level, AUSMAT (Western Australia's matriculation), the IB Diploma, and CIMP (Canadian International Matriculation Programme). They can be excellent, but they are the most expensive pre-university routes, so it is worth being clear about why you want one.

What they cost (2026 figures)

Taylor's College publishes its 2026 fees for local students:[1]

  • Cambridge A Level, 3 subjects: MYR 35,453
  • Cambridge A Level, 4 subjects: MYR 47,054
  • It takes 17 months for the February intake and 15 months for the April and August intakes. Entry needs a pass with five credits including English, plus some subject prerequisites.
  • Fees are reviewed every year.

Other colleges, such as Sunway, did not publish 2026 fees for A-Level, AUSMAT or CIMP on pages we could read, and comparison sites give figures that disagree with each other. Ask each college for its current fee schedule in writing before you compare.

IB Diploma: the IB describes its Diploma Programme as a two-year programme for students aged 16 to 19.[2] In Malaysia it is offered mainly by international schools and a few colleges, and we could not confirm a current published fee. Ask each provider.

On top of fees, add hostel or rent, transport, laptop and exam-board or application fees. If a page does not list one of these, it is unknown, not free.

Compare with the free and low-cost routes

  • Matrikulasi KPM: tuition and accommodation are free.[3]
  • Form 6: STPM exam fees are waived for five subjects at government schools.[4]

Both also lead to public university degrees. An international programme is a choice, not the only path to a good university.

Can you still go to a public university?

Yes. UPUOnline accepts A-Level, the IB Diploma and AUSMAT/SAM as entry categories for degree applications.[5] Check each degree's special requirements in e-Panduan, because grade conversions differ.

When it makes sense

  • You are aiming for a specific overseas university or country, and the programme is the usual entry route there.
  • You have a scholarship or sponsor that pays for it. Many large scholarships fund a pre-university year before a degree (see the scholarships guide in the library).
  • You want a January, February or April start, or subjects your Form 6 centre does not offer.

When to think twice

  • Your family would need to borrow heavily, and a free route leads to the same degree.
  • You are not sure yet what to study. Your subject choices shape which degrees you can apply for.

Which one?

  • Length: Taylor's A Level takes 15 or 17 months depending on the intake,[1] and the IB Diploma two years.[2] Ask each college how long AUSMAT or CIMP runs for your start date. A shorter programme can mean a lower total cost and an earlier degree start.
  • Subjects: with A-Level you pick three or four subjects, so pick them with your target degrees in mind.
  • Assessment: each programme mixes exams and coursework differently. Ask the college to show you how it is assessed and how results are converted for the universities you want.

What to do next

  1. Write the one reason you want an international programme. If the reason is "it seems better", compare it with Matrikulasi and Form 6 first.
  2. Ask two colleges for the total cost of the whole programme in writing, including registration and exam fees, for your start date.
  3. Check whether the scholarships you are eligible for pay for this programme, and their deadlines.
