The figures, at a glance
A diploma is a two-and-a-half to three-year qualification that is more practical than a pre-university course. You can go to work with it, or use it to enter a degree. It is one of the main routes after SPM, not a second choice.
How long it takes
MyGOV says most diplomas take 2.5 to 3 years, and some take 2 years, depending on the course and institution.[1]
Where you can study
- Polytechnics (Politeknik): 36 across Malaysia (1 APEX, 7 Premier, 23 conventional and 5 METrO polytechnics).[2]
- Community colleges (Kolej Komuniti): 106 across Malaysia in the 2026/27 UPU circular, offering diplomas and certificates.[2]
- MARA colleges: 1 Kolej MARA and 6 Kolej Profesional MARA, reserved for Bumiputera applicants.[2]
- Private colleges and universities, which must be registered with the Ministry of Higher Education and offer MQA-accredited programmes.[1]
Entry requirements (2026/27 general rules)
The UPU circular set these minimums for SPM leavers:[2]
| Where | Diploma | Certificate (Sijil) |
|---|---|---|
| Public university | 3 credits including BM, and a pass in Sejarah | |
| Polytechnic or community college | 3 credits, and a pass in BM and Sejarah | 1 credit, and a pass in BM and Sejarah |
| MARA college | A pass in BM and Sejarah |
Many courses ask for more, such as 4 or 5 credits or specific subjects like Mathematics, Science or Accounting.[1] Check each course in e-Panduan UPUOnline.
How to apply
- Private institutions: through each institution's own portal.[1]
What it costs
- Hostels are not everywhere: in 2023/2024, seven polytechnics had no hostel, and only six community colleges did.[4] If your nearest one has none, rent and transport become your biggest costs. Those are not published, so treat them as unknown, not zero.
- Private diplomas cost much more and vary widely. See the cost-of-study guide in the library.
Help with money
- PTPTN advance (WPP): for the June 2026 intake, PTPTN offered a RM1,500 advance to 40,099 new diploma students at public universities and polytechnics, with RM60.1 million set aside. It is for Malaysian students who agreed to take it when they applied through UPUOnline and whose parents or guardians receive Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR).[6] It is a loan advance, not a gift. See the PTPTN guide.
- Dermasiswa B40 (JPA): a grant for diploma and TVET diploma study for SPM leavers from low-income families.[7]
- BKPKK: help for community college students whose parents earn RM3,000 or less a month, for study of at least four semesters at certificate level.[7]
How to check a programme on the MQA register
Before you pay a private institution, check the exact programme on the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR).[1]
- Go to www2.mqa.gov.my/mqr and open the search.
- Type part of the programme name (for example "Computer Science") and choose "Diploma" under Type of Qualification. You can also search by institution or reference number, such as an "A1234" or "MQA/FA1234" code.[8]
- Check the institution and the campus. The register says programmes run at locations it does not list are not accredited.[8]
What it leads to
You can start work, or apply for a degree. UPUOnline treats public university and polytechnic or community college diplomas as entry categories for degrees.[3]
What to do next
- List two or three diploma courses you like and check each one's special requirements in e-Panduan UPUOnline.
- For your nearest polytechnic or community college, find out whether it has a hostel. If not, price transport or rent.
- For any private diploma, look it up on the MQA register before you pay a deposit.
