Asasi and foundation programmes are one-year bridges between SPM and a degree. Public universities call them Asasi. Private colleges usually call them Foundation. They look similar, but the cost, the entry rules and where they lead can be very different.
Public Asasi: what it is
- A pre-university programme for SPM leavers, run by selected public universities, that leads to a bachelor's degree.[1]
- It lasts 1 year (two semesters) and focuses on a field such as science, engineering, accounting or law.[1]
- Some Asasi programmes are "feeder" (perintis) programmes: if you accept one, you must complete your degree at the same university. UPUOnline marks these at the end of the programme name.[2]
Entry and how to apply
For the 2026/27 intake, the general rule for Asasi at a public university, polytechnic or MARA college was at least five credits including Bahasa Melayu, and a pass in Sejarah.[3] Each programme then adds its own special requirements, which you can check in e-Panduan UPUOnline (online.mohe.gov.my/epanduan).[2]
You apply through UPUOnline. MyGOV says applications usually open between February and April each year.[1] For 2026/27, the SPM-leaver window ran from 29 January to 12 April 2026.[2]
Who each programme is open to
UPU's 2026/27 circular divides public Asasi programmes into two groups.[3]
Reserved for Malay, Sabah and Sarawak Bumiputera and Orang Asli applicants: Asasi Sains UM, Asasi Sains Sosial UM, Asasi UIAM, Asasi UNIMAS, Asasi UMS, all UiTM programmes, Asasi UniSZA, and all MARA higher education programmes.
Open to all qualified applicants (examples): Asasi Pengajian Islam UM, ASASIpintar UKM, Asasi Sains Pertanian UPM, Asasi Pengurusan UUM, Tamhidi USIM, Asasi STEM UMT, Asasi Sains UMK, Asasi UPNM, and Asasi Teknologi Kejuruteraan at polytechnics.
If you are not Bumiputera, build your UPU choices from the second list, and add Form 6 or a polytechnic diploma as well.
What public Asasi costs
Public Asasi fees are low compared with private foundation, but each university publishes its own fee sheet, and we could not confirm a current figure for 2026. Ask the university, and remember hostel and food on top.
There is targeted help. Bantuan Kewangan Asasi (BKA) sponsors students on Asasi programmes at public universities and five selected polytechnics, aimed at B40 and M40 families.[4] Apply through biasiswa.mohe.gov.my.
Private foundation
Private colleges run their own foundation programmes, with their own intakes and fees. One example with a published 2026 fee:
Other private colleges, such as Sunway, did not publish their 2026 foundation fees on pages we could read, so ask each college for its full fee schedule in writing before you compare.
Things to know about private foundation:
- It usually feeds the college's own degrees best. Ask in writing which degrees elsewhere accept it.
- It can still lead to a public university. UPUOnline accepts "Foundation IPTS" as an entry category for degree applications.[2]
- Loans for private foundation are limited. See the PTPTN guide in the library before you count on one.
When each makes sense
- Public Asasi: you have strong results, you know your field, and you are happy to commit to one university.
- Private foundation: you want a specific private degree, a February or April start, or a programme not offered publicly, and you have a funding plan.
- Neither: if you are unsure of your field, Form 6 or a diploma may keep more doors open.
What to do next
- Search e-Panduan UPUOnline for Asasi programmes in your field and note which are feeder programmes and who each is open to.
- If you are looking at private foundation, ask for the total cost in writing: tuition, registration, resources and hostel, for the year you would start.
- Check BKA eligibility at biasiswa.mohe.gov.my if your family is B40 or M40.
