Matrikulasi: subjects, living costs and the degree after it

Key facts

• Purpose: KPM Matrikulasi is a pre-university route. UPU treats its graduates as a separate category when applying for degrees; completing it is not a degree offer.^[1][2]

• Entry: the government summary lists Malaysian citizenship, current-year SPM candidacy and age no more than 20 when applying. Science, Engineering, Accounting, Professional Accounting and Computer Science have different subject requirements.^[1]

• Costs: the government summary says tuition and accommodation are free and eligible students receive BSHP living assistance. This does not say all personal spending is paid.^[1]

Intake and duration

KPM lists a 2026/2027 academic calendar. A calendar is not an application advert: the next application opening and closing dates are not published on the calendar page checked. Use the Matrikulasi portal and your own SPM-year notice.^[3]

The KPM brochure distinguishes a two-semester programme and a four-semester Science programme. Do not budget for “one year” until you know which offer you have.^[4]

Fees, aid and source differences

The 2024 KPM FAQ still instructs successful applicants to pay the specified registration charges and follow their college’s registration steps. “Free tuition and accommodation” does not erase those charges. A current total registration bill and BSHP amount are not published in the government summary checked. Ask the offered college for the current bill and aid conditions.^[5][1]

First salary: a Matrikulasi-specific starting-salary range is not published in these sources. This route prepares you for further study; a field’s graduate salary is not the pay for finishing pre-university.^[1][2]

What this means for you

Work backwards from a few degrees that interest you: check required pre-university subjects, results and MUET. Put meals, travel home, data and devices into a separate family budget. Ask your school counsellor to help compare routes; the shortest route is not automatically the right one.
