Key facts
Medical Terminology is a Doane University (US) course on edX. Not a Mereka course.[1] Free on the audit track. The verified certificate costs US$119.[1] Introductory, no prerequisites, about 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week, at your own pace.[1] Free access lasts a limited time and gives no certificate.[1]
What you'll do
You learn the rules of medical word building: root words, prefixes and suffixes[1]. By the end you should be able to break a long medical term into its parts to work out what it means, read common abbreviations in a doctor's notes, and use the terms correctly in written reports[1].
No Mereka Academy course covers health yet, which is why this one comes from another provider[3].
What it costs and how to start
Create a free edX account, enrol, and pick the audit track to study for free[1]. On audit you get no certificate and your access ends after a limited time. The verified track costs US$119 and adds unlimited access, graded assignments and a certificate[1]. The price is in US dollars, so what you pay in ringgit depends on the exchange rate.
The current run is self-paced and open until 23 June 2027[1]. It is in English. edX's terms set a minimum age of 13 and say nothing extra about users under 18[2].
Who it suits
You, if Health & Science interests you but you have not picked a job yet. Nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and lab staff all read and write these words every day, so this is useful whichever one you choose. It also suits you if you are heading into a foundation (asasi) or diploma in science and want a head start. SPM Biology is plenty of background.
What this means for you
- The same word parts turn up again in anatomy, pharmacology and nursing classes. Learning them now makes those first lectures less of a shock.
- You do not need the certificate to get the learning. Pay for it only if you have a clear use for it.
- Eight weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week is a real commitment, and free access runs out. Start when you can keep a steady weekly slot.
- It teaches vocabulary, not what a health job feels like. Pair it with a conversation with someone who does the work, and read the library's Health & Science money guide and post-SPM pathways overview for the Malaysian routes.
Your next step
- Make a free edX account and enrol on the audit track: Medical Terminology(opens in a new tab).
- After the first week, take one long word from a medicine box or a health news story at home and break it into its parts. Ask the programme team at your 30-day check-in which Health & Science routes lean on this most.
