The question it answers: what is the first real step to working on a construction site in Malaysia, and is site work for me?

What it is

SICW (Kursus Induksi Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerja Binaan) is a safety and health awareness course for construction sites, developed by CIDB, the government body for the construction industry[1]. You need it, or an online version called eSICW, before you can register as construction personnel and get the CIDB Green Card (Kad Hijau)[1][2]. Members of the public can also take it just to learn about site safety[1].

This is not a Mereka Academy course: none of the Mereka courses covers engineering or the skilled trades[3].

Age, time and cost

It is open to Malaysian citizens aged 16 and over, so a 17-year-old can take it[1]. It runs for 6 hours in one day, in person or by video call[1]. The fee is set by each CIDB-accredited training centre and shown when you book in CIDB's CIMS system, so it varies; you pay in full three days before the course, and it is not refunded if you miss it[1]. Registering for the Green Card afterwards cost RM35 for one year in October 2026[2]. You get an attendance slip at the end[1].

Who it suits

Learners from the Engineering & Skilled Trades taster who are serious about construction, electrical, plumbing or site supervision routes, or want holiday work on a site. Talk to your parents first: it costs money and site work needs care.

Your first step

  1. With a parent, register as an individual on CIMS (cims.cidb.gov.my) and compare course fees and locations near you[1].
  2. Ask your facilitator whether a site visit or a TVET course should come first.
  3. Record your decision in your Future Map before your 30-day check-in.
