You may already code, game or fix the family laptop. Tech jobs are wider than that, and many of them do not need a degree to start. This guide shows what people in tech actually do in a week, the routes in after SPM with the results each one asks for, and how to try the work before you choose.

Ready to shortlist? Where to study Technology & AI in Malaysia, and who funds it names twelve programmes by route, with entry links, MQR checks and the funding windows to watch.

Key facts

  • For 2026/27, a polytechnic diploma asked for 3 SPM credits and a pass in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah.[1]
  • ADTEC Kuala Lumpur's SKM (Malaysian Skills Certificate) Level 3 computer systems course takes 21 months with free tuition, and takes Form 5 leavers with at least a G in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah.[2]
  • Matrikulasi's Computer Science stream asks for at least a C in Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics and Computer Science.[3]
  • Applications for the UP_TVET Perdana intake 1/2027 close on 16 November 2026.[4]
  • An SKM certificate alone does not get you into a degree through UPU, the central application for public universities. A diploma, DKM or DLKM does.[5]

What the work actually is

The same job title can mean very different weeks. A "developer" at a bank and one at a five-person startup do different things, so look at the tasks, not the title (Tasks, not job titles shows how). These are typical weeks, not a promise; ask a practitioner how theirs compares.

RoleWhat a week can look like
Computer systems technicianSet up laptops and accounts for new staff, replace a faulty part, install software, get a printer back on the network, and log every job
IT helpdesk and supportAnswer calls and tickets from people who cannot log in, reset passwords, talk someone through a fix, pass on what you cannot solve, and write notes so the next person can
Network administratorKeep the office network and Wi-Fi running, add users and devices, read error logs when something drops, and plan new cabling with a contractor
Software developerBreak a feature into small pieces, write and test the code (often with an AI assistant drafting parts), review a teammate's code, and fix bugs users report
Software testerWrite test cases, try to break new features before users do, and describe each bug clearly enough that a developer can repeat it
Data analystPull data from a spreadsheet or database, clean the errors, build a chart, and explain to a manager what the numbers do and do not show
Product (UI and UX) designerTalk to users, sketch app screens, build a clickable prototype, watch people get stuck, and change the design
Information security analystWatch alerts for strange logins, close weak spots, check that customer data is protected, and teach colleagues to spot phishing
AI operationsTest what an AI tool produces, write the instructions and test cases it runs on, flag where it fails, and report what needs fixing

Not all of these need a degree. ADTEC's SKM Level 3 course prepares you to work as a computer systems technician.[2] The polytechnic IT diploma lists roles such as software developer, software tester, web programmer, database administrator, network administrator and technical helpdesk.[6] UTeM's software development degree lists full-stack and mobile app developer, system analyst and software tester, among others.[7]

Routes in after SPM

Real examples from official listings. The SPM rules are the 2026/27 ones; check again for 2027/28.

Matrikulasi, then a degreeKPM Matrikulasi, Computer Science stream, then a computing degree through UPU, such as UTeM's Bachelor of Computer Science (Software Development)C in Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics and Computer Science, one more listed subject at C, and a pass in Sejarah; current SPM candidates aged 20 or under[3]1 year, then 7 semesters for the UTeM degree[3][7]
ApprenticeshipSLDN (National Dual Training System) with a company that takes partEmployers shortlist SPM or PMR leavers[8]1 to 2 years, 70 to 80 per cent of it at the company[8]

Each university, polytechnic and community college programme also has its own special requirements (syarat khas) in e-Panduan UPUOnline, and you must meet those as well as the general rule.[1]

A few things the table does not show:

  • Tracks differ by polytechnic. The IT diploma's Software and Application Development track runs at 13 polytechnics and Networking System at 11. Information Security is at Politeknik METrO Tasek Gelugor, Ungku Omar and Mersing, and Game Development at Politeknik METrO Kuala Lumpur.[6] Choose the polytechnic for the track you want.
  • The ADTEC course pays you to learn. Tuition, a hostel place and meals are free, with RM100 a month in pocket money and RM300 a month during practical training.[2] The UP_TVET Perdana intake 1/2027 takes applications from 1 October to 16 November 2026.[4]
  • From skills to a degree. UPU does not take SKM holders directly: go on to a diploma, DKM or DLKM first. Polytechnic and community college diploma holders apply for degrees through UPU in their own category.[5]
  • Form 6 and Asasi also lead to computing degrees. Matrikulasi's Computer Science stream needs Additional Mathematics and Computer Science at SPM. If you did not take them, look at Form 6 (STPM) or Asasi and foundation.
  • Bootcamps and work-first. Some people get in through a short bootcamp, or by building things and being hired by a startup. A bootcamp certificate is not a diploma. If a provider says its course is accredited, look it up on the Malaysian Qualifications Register(opens in a new tab) before you pay.
  • Professional registration. The Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) registers technologists and technicians, with Information and Communication Technology and Cyber Security among its fields.[9] Its homepage does not say which jobs require it, so ask employers whether they look for it.

The money, briefly

First pay in tech depends a lot on whether you start with a certificate, a diploma or a degree. The money in Technology & AI has the 2025 figures for each, and First salaries by career area compares all eight areas.

How AI is changing it

AI tools already draft code and answer routine support questions, so beginners may be expected to test, review and explain work sooner. Work with people, physical equipment and responsibility for what goes live is changing least; AI and the future of Technology and AI work shows the evidence task by task.

Try it now

What this means for you

  • You can start without a degree. A skills certificate or diploma leads to real technician, support and junior developer work, and a diploma keeps the degree door open.
  • Check your SPM subjects early. Matrikulasi's Computer Science stream needs Additional Mathematics and Computer Science; the polytechnic diploma and ADTEC routes ask for less.
  • Where you study shapes what you learn. Pick a polytechnic for its track, and check whether it has a hostel.
  • As AI writes more routine code, the people who can test, explain and take responsibility for software will matter more. Practise those now. This is a reading of early evidence, not a certainty.
  • The requirements here are for 2026/27. Rules for 2027/28 may change, so check before you apply.

Your next step

  1. Look up two routes from the table on UP_TVET(opens in a new tab) or, when the 2027/28 listings open, in e-Panduan UPUOnline(opens in a new tab). If a skills course fits, put 16 November 2026 in your calendar.
  2. On Day 2, ask a practitioner: "What did you actually do last Tuesday, hour by hour?" Compare their answer with the table above and note what surprised you in your Future Map.

Choose one course above. Before your 30-day check-in, try the first section and save one learning example in Future Map. At your 90-day check-in, decide whether to continue or switch. Read the course guide for access, age and availability notes.
