Key facts

  • KPM's teaching degree, PISMP, takes SPM leavers straight into an Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG, a teacher training institute). For the 2026 intake it asked for excellent grades in five subjects, credits in BM, English and Sejarah, and an age of 20 or under on 30 June 2026.[1]
  • SPM leavers who enter an IPG study for five years. The 2026 intake had 9,800 places.[1][2]
  • USM's Bachelor of Social Work takes 8 semesters. For 2026/27 it asks for a CGPA of 2.67 in STPM or matrikulasi/asasi, B- in two listed subjects and an excellent interview.[3]
  • Parliament passed the Social Work Profession Bill 2026 in July 2026. Social workers in NGOs, community groups, companies and private practice will have to register once it takes effect; we found no start date when we checked on 23 October 2026.[4][5]
  • A diploma at a polytechnic or community college asked for 3 SPM credits and a pass in BM and Sejarah for 2026/27.[6]

Community & Social Impact is the area of NGOs, social enterprises and public service: careers built around a cause. It includes teaching, social work, community work and the people who run programmes and raise the money behind them. This guide covers what the work looks like in a normal week, the routes in after SPM, and how to test your interest before you choose.

For named programmes, the institutions that run them and who funds each route, see Where to study Community & Social Impact in Malaysia, and who funds it.

What the work actually is

A job title tells you little. What matters is the tasks you would do on a Tuesday afternoon, so here are common roles described that way. See Tasks, not job titles for how to break any job down like this, and ask a practitioner to correct the list.

  • Teacher. Plans and teaches lessons, marks work, keeps track of pupils who fall behind, meets parents and runs a club or sport.
  • Preschool or early childhood educator. Plans play-based activities, watches how each child is developing, keeps records and talks to parents at pick-up. Often reached through a certificate or diploma in early childhood education.
  • Social worker or welfare officer. Visits families, assesses what they need, connects them to help, writes case reports and works with schools, clinics and other agencies.
  • NGO programme officer. Runs a project from plan to report: schedules activities, manages a small budget, recruits and briefs volunteers and writes updates for funders.
  • Community organiser. Meets residents, listens, runs meetings and turns a shared problem into a plan people act on. This is the role you meet in the Day 2 taster.
  • Fundraising or partnerships executive. Writes grant proposals, looks after donors, organises events and reports what the money achieved.
  • Assistant administrative officer in a government office. Handles applications at the counter and online, checks documents, updates records and answers questions from the public.
  • Policy researcher. Reads data and reports, interviews people affected by a problem and writes short briefs that decision-makers can use.
  • Social entrepreneur. Runs a business whose income pays for a social aim, so the week mixes selling with measuring whether the aim is being met.

Public service, NGOs and social enterprises hire in very different ways. A government post follows a formal recruitment process, while a small NGO may hire the volunteer it already knows. Ask each one how people usually get in.

Routes in after SPM

There is no single route, and each one opens different first jobs. Entry rules change every year and differ by programme, so treat this table as examples and check the official page for your intake.

Teaching. PISMP is KPM's route for people who want to become government teachers (Pegawai Perkhidmatan Pendidikan). Its entry routes are SPM, STPM, STAM, matrikulasi and the early childhood diploma (PAKK) from a Kolej Vokasional, and SPM leavers in some groups, such as Orang Asli and Penan students and students with special needs, can use a special route.[11] The window is short and early: in 2026, applications closed on the Thursday after SPM 2025 results were announced on 31 March.[1][2]

Social work. In July 2026 both houses of Parliament passed the Social Work Profession Bill 2026. It sets up a Social Work Profession Council to register practitioners, set competency standards and handle ethics and discipline. The minister said registration will be compulsory for social workers in NGOs, community-based organisations, companies and private practice.[4][5] When we checked on 23 October 2026 we found no date for the law to take effect, so ask the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) or any course you consider how it prepares you to register.

The money, briefly

Many people choose this area for the cause, so look at the pay before you commit, and ask whether a role is funded by a grant that ends. The money in Community & Social Impact and First salaries by career area have the sourced figures.

How AI is changing it

AI tools can draft reports, summarise notes and translate notices, which saves time but raises hard questions about people's private data. Listening, building trust and judging what a family really needs stay with people, and AI and the future of Community and Social Impact work sets out the evidence task by task.

Try it now

Before First Move. Pick one role from the list above and X-ray it with the job X-ray kit. If you can, help at one session of a community group near you, with a parent's agreement.

On Day 2. The task trial has your team fix the missed appointments at a made-up community service centre. If your cohort runs a taster for each career area, choose the Social Impact taster: design a youth campaign for a more liveable street from 30 made-up resident comments, then defend it to a community organiser or programme officer. If your cohort runs four labs instead, the People and Society lab has you teach a four-minute lesson. Take questions from the People and Society question bank to the practitioner conversations.

What this means for you

  • If you want to teach in a government school, PISMP is the route that starts straight from SPM, but its grades are high and the window closes days after results. Keep a second route ready, such as Form 6 or a diploma.
  • Social work is becoming a registered profession. Before you choose a course, ask how its graduates will register with the new council.
  • NGOs and community groups often value what you have done as much as your certificate. Volunteering now gives you something real to talk about.
  • A cause-driven job can be less secure when it depends on a grant. Ask how long a role is funded before you rely on it.

Your next step

  1. Before your 30-day check-in, spend one session helping a community group, and write down three tasks you did and which one you would happily do every week.
  2. If teaching appeals, open the PISMP page on MyGOV(opens in a new tab), follow its link to the requirements, and note them next to your expected SPM results.

Choose one course above. Before your 30-day check-in, try the first section and save one learning example in Future Map. At your 90-day check-in, decide whether to continue or switch. Read the course guide for access, age and availability notes.
