Media & Creative after SPM: the work, the routes in and how to try it
What designers, video editors, animators and content producers actually do each week, the routes in after SPM (a skills course, community college, polytechnic, ASWARA, an apprenticeship), what each asks for, and how to try the work now.

The figures, at a glance
If you are the person who edits the class video, draws in the margins or runs a club's Instagram, this area is about turning that into paid work. Creative jobs are about making things for an audience and a client: a brief, a deadline, feedback, then another version. This guide shows what the work looks like in a week, the routes in after SPM with what each asks for, and how to try it before you choose.
Ready to shortlist? Where to study Media & Creative in Malaysia, and who funds it names twelve programmes by route, with entry links, MQR checks and the funding that exists.
Key facts
For 2026/27, a polytechnic diploma asked for 3 SPM credits and a pass in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah; a community college certificate asked for 1 credit and the same passes.[1] ASWARA's Diploma in Film and Video takes 36 months and asks for a credit in Bahasa Melayu, at least a D in Sejarah, and a pass in its interview and audition.[2] The National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) at Kemasik runs an SKM (Malaysian Skills Certificate) Level 3 video production course that takes 27 months, accepts applicants aged 17 to 30 with or without SPM, and pays an allowance of RM100 a month.[3] Politeknik Muadzam Shah's graphic design diploma takes 36 months, including one semester of industrial training.[4] Applications for the UP_TVET Perdana intake 1/2027 close on 16 November 2026.[5]
What the work actually is
Creative job titles change from one employer to the next, and many people do several of these roles at once, especially in small agencies and as freelancers. So look at the tasks, not the title (Tasks, not job titles shows how). These are typical weeks, not a promise; ask a practitioner how theirs compares.
| Role | What a week can look like |
|---|---|
| Content producer | Plan a week of posts or short videos with a client, write scripts, film on a phone, edit, publish, then check what people watched and change next week's plan |
| Graphic designer | Read a brief, sketch three ideas, build the chosen one in design software, get feedback, fix it, and prepare files for print and for phones |
| Video editor | Sort hours of footage, cut a rough version, add captions, sound and music you have the rights to, and redo it after the director's notes |
| Camera operator or videographer | Check and pack equipment, set up lights and sound on location, film interviews or events, and back up every file before you leave |
| 2D animator or storyboard artist | Turn a script into a storyboard, draw characters and key frames, and adjust timing after the director reviews it |
| Copywriter | Write headlines, captions and scripts in Bahasa Malaysia and English, check every claim against what the client actually offers, and rewrite after feedback |
| Brand marketer | Plan a campaign, brief designers and creators, watch the numbers, and explain to a manager what worked and what to change |
| Production assistant | Book locations and people, keep the shoot schedule, look after release forms and props, and solve problems on set |
Many of these start from a certificate or diploma. The polytechnic graphic design diploma prepares you for work in illustration, advertising, packaging, photography and animation.[4] The polytechnic video and film diploma lists camera operator, scriptwriter, production manager and video editor.[6] A community college certificate in 2D animation lists storyboard artist, character designer, 2D animator and video editor.[7]
Routes in after SPM
Real examples from official listings. The SPM rules are the 2026/27 ones; check again for 2027/28.
| Route | Example programme | What it asks for | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| TVET skills certificate | Sijil Lanjutan Teknologi Maklumat (Penerbitan Video Kreatif), SKM Level 3, IKBN Kemasik, Terengganu | SPM, or no formal qualification if you can read, write and count; aged 17 to 30; Malaysian citizen[3] | 27 months[3] |
| Community college certificate | Sijil Animasi 2D, Kolej Komuniti Kepala Batas | The general rule: 1 SPM credit and a pass in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah[1] | 4 semesters[7] |
| Polytechnic diploma | Diploma Rekabentuk Grafik, Politeknik Muadzam Shah | The general rule: 3 SPM credits and a pass in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah[1] | 36 months, including industrial training[4] |
| Arts academy diploma | Diploma Filem dan Video, ASWARA (National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage), Kuala Lumpur | A credit in Bahasa Melayu and at least a D in Sejarah, or a related SKM Level 3, plus an interview and audition[2] | 36 months[2] |
| Apprenticeship | SLDN (National Dual Training System) with a company that takes part | Employers shortlist SPM or PMR leavers[8] | 1 to 2 years, 70 to 80 per cent of it at the company[8] |
Each polytechnic and community college programme also has its own special requirements (syarat khas) in e-Panduan UPUOnline, and you must meet those as well as the general rule.[1]
A few things the table does not show:
- Skills can lead to a diploma. ASWARA's film diploma also accepts holders of related SKM Level 3 certificates, such as video and film editing.[2] So a skills course is not a dead end.
- Other polytechnic options. Politeknik METrO Tasek Gelugor's Diploma in Video and Film Studies takes 30 months.[6]
- To a degree. ASWARA lists bachelor's degrees in film and video (directing and cinematography).[9] Polytechnic and community college diploma holders apply for public university degrees through UPU, the central application, in their own category, but a skills certificate alone does not qualify.[10] Form 6 and Asasi lead to creative and communication degrees too: see Form 6 (STPM) and Asasi and foundation.
- Freelance and creator work. Some people start by taking small jobs or building an audience while they study. Read Work, apprenticeship, enterprise or a gap year before you register a business or skip further study.

The money, briefly
Pay in this area depends on the route, the employer and whether you earn a salary or charge fees as a freelancer. The money in Media & Creative has the 2025 figures, and First salaries by career area compares all eight areas.
How AI is changing it
Generative AI now drafts copy, images and rough video edits in seconds, so a first draft is worth less than it was. Knowing the audience, keeping a client's trust, and checking rights and facts before anything is published are the parts changing least; AI and the future of Media and Creative work shows the evidence task by task.
Try it now
- On Day 2 of First Move: choose the Media and Creative taster. Your team turns a brief from a made-up community library into a 30-second campaign concept, checks every line the AI wrote against the client's fact sheet, and pitches it to a practitioner. If your cohort runs four labs instead, the Design and Create taster asks you to make a poster that works in five seconds; read the Design and Create lab brief first.
- Talk to a practitioner: pick three questions from Questions for a practitioner: Design and Create before the day.
- Take a short course: Content Creation, Personal Branding or Freelancing 101 on Mereka Academy. Free courses for each career area has the full list.
- Make one real thing for someone else: a poster for a school club, a short video for a relative's stall. Working to someone else's brief, and changing it after their feedback, is most of the job.
What this means for you
- You can start without a degree. Skills certificates and diplomas lead straight to design, video and animation work, and a diploma keeps the degree door open.
- Expect to show your work. Interviews, auditions and portfolios matter here as much as SPM grades, so start collecting your best pieces with the brief and the versions.
- Many creative jobs are in small teams or freelance. That can mean more say over your work and a less predictable income, so ask a practitioner how they handle quiet months.
- As AI makes drafts cheaper, the people who can listen to a client, judge what an audience will feel, and check what is true and allowed will matter more. This is a reading of early evidence, not a certainty.
- The requirements here are for 2026/27. Rules for 2027/28 may change, so check before you apply.
Your next step
- Look up two routes from the table on UP_TVET(opens in a new tab) or, when the 2027/28 listings open, in e-Panduan UPUOnline(opens in a new tab). If a skills course fits, put 16 November 2026 in your calendar.
- On Day 2, ask a practitioner: "What did the last brief you worked on ask for, and how many versions did it take?" Note the answer in your Future Map.
Choose one course above. Before your 30-day check-in, try the first section and save one learning example in Future Map. At your 90-day check-in, decide whether to continue or switch. Read the course guide for access, age and availability notes.
