Key facts
For the 2026/27 intake, a community college certificate needed one SPM credit plus passes in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah, and a polytechnic or community college diploma needed three credits plus the same passes.[1] Politeknik Hulu Terengganu's Diploma in Tourism Management takes three years (six semesters), including one full semester of industrial training.[2] To get a city tourist guide licence you must be a Malaysian citizen aged 18 or over, pass MOTAC's basic course and competency test, and join a tourist guides' association.[3] JPA's National Sponsorship Programme (PPN) funds degrees at universities in the QS top 20 overall or top 10 for the subject (2026 rules), and engineering and science applicants need at least 9A+.[4] A UK Student visa applicant must show £1,529 a month for living costs in London, or £1,171 elsewhere, for up to nine months, on top of course fees.[5]
Global Opportunities is the career area for people who want their work to cross borders: hosting visitors, moving goods between countries, working in more than one language, or studying abroad. First Move describes it as scholarships, study abroad and international careers, with honest numbers on cost and return. Many of these careers can start in Malaysia. Going abroad is one route, not the only one.
For named programmes, institutions and sponsors, see Where to study Global Opportunities in Malaysia, and who funds it.
What the work actually is
"International" is not a job. The jobs underneath it are, and their weeks look very different. Tasks, not job titles shows how to break a job into its tasks.
| Role | What a normal week involves | A usual way in |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel front office assistant | Checking guests in and out, taking reservations, sorting out complaints and requests, and sometimes working the night audit. | Community college certificate or diploma in hotel operations[6] |
| Food and beverage or events staff | Setting up and serving functions and banquets, working with the kitchen to time service, closing down after events. | Certificate or diploma in hotel or event management[6] |
| Tourist guide | Planning routes, leading groups, explaining a place's history and culture, and keeping people safe and on time. | MOTAC licence, after its course and test[3] |
| Travel consultant or tour operator | Building travel packages, booking transport and hotels, and fixing problems when trips go wrong. | Diploma in tourism management[7] |
| Logistics or export coordinator | Preparing shipping and customs documents, tracking containers, and answering buyers and forwarders in other time zones. | Diploma or degree in business or logistics |
| Translator or interpreter | Translating documents, checking and correcting AI drafts, and interpreting in meetings or clinics. | Strong working languages, often with a degree in languages |
| International sales or business development | Finding buyers abroad, preparing quotes, calling partners and travelling to trade fairs. | Degree in business, sometimes after a sales job |
| International relations or policy | Researching other countries, writing briefings, and organising official visits. | A degree route. Government posts are advertised by the Public Service Commission (SPA) with their own rules |
These are typical weeks, not guarantees. Politeknik Hulu Terengganu lists tourism officer, travel and tour supervisor, travel package consultant and event coordinator among the jobs its tourism diploma prepares you for.[7]
Routes in after SPM
Here are three real programmes and what they asked for on their official pages, plus the route abroad. Each one stands for a whole route.
| Route | Example programme | What it asks for | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community college certificate | Sijil Operasi Perhotelan (hotel operations), Kolej Komuniti Selayang | No extra prerequisites listed on UP_TVET.[6] The general 2026/27 rule was one SPM credit plus passes in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah[1] | 4 semesters |
| Polytechnic diploma | Diploma Pengurusan Pelancongan (tourism management), Politeknik Hulu Terengganu | Three SPM credits in any subjects, plus passes in Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah and English[2] | 6 semesters |
| Degree, after matrikulasi, STPM, asasi or a diploma | Ijazah Sarjana Muda Keusahawanan (Pelancongan), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) | STPM with a CGPA of 2.00 plus at least a D in SPM English and Mathematics, or matrikulasi, asasi or a diploma with a CGPA of 2.00. All routes need MUET Band 2.0[8] | 8 semesters |
| Sponsored study abroad | JPA's PPN or JKPJ programmes | Top SPM results and an age limit; see the next section[4][9] | A preparatory course, then a full degree |
A certificate or diploma is not a dead end: UMK's tourism degree takes diploma holders.[8] Each pathway has its own guide:
- TVET after SPM and TVET in depth: community colleges, skills institutes and SKM levels.
- Diplomas: polytechnic, UiTM, community college or private.
- Matrikulasi, Form 6 and the STPM and Asasi and foundation: the bridges to a degree.
- A-Level, AUSMAT, IB and CIMP: international pre-university programmes, what they cost and when they are worth it.
Entry rules change every year. Before you apply, check each programme's special requirements (syarat khas) in e-Panduan UPUOnline(opens in a new tab).
The licence tourist guides need
Tourist guides need a licence from MOTAC (the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture). For a city tourist guide, MOTAC's 2026 guideline asks for:[3]
- Malaysian citizenship and an age of at least 18;
- the Basic City Tourist Guide course and a pass in its competency test, or another course the Commissioner recognises;
- good physical and mental health and no criminal record;
- membership of a tourist guides' association.
The application fee is RM10 and the licence fee RM50. A licence lasts one year, and new guides start on probation and must pass a confirmation course between one and two years after they are licensed.[3] If you want to guide in nature areas, or in Sabah or Sarawak, ask MOTAC which licence applies.
Studying abroad: routes and real costs
There are two ways to pay for a degree abroad: a sponsor, or your family.
Sponsored routes. JPA (the Public Service Department) runs two programmes for SPM leavers. Both are convertible loans (Pinjaman Boleh Ubah), so part of the money may have to be repaid, and both need you to be under 19 (under 20 for peralihan students) on 31 December of your SPM year.[4][9]
- PPN funds a preparatory course and then a degree at a university in the QS top 20 overall or top 10 for the subject (2026 rules). Engineering and science need at least 9A+ in the listed subjects and other fields 8A+, with at least A- in the rest. B40 and M40 families get priority, and so do students with good Mandarin for sponsorship to China. For 2026 there was no sponsorship to Singapore, and the United States depended on current policy.[4]
- JKPJ funds preparatory study and then a degree in Japan, Korea, France or Germany, in engineering, science and technology or the social sciences.[9]
MARA, Khazanah, Bank Negara and company foundations run other schemes, each with its own rules and bonds. Scholarships and study loans after SPM compares them, and Scholarships and loans from your state covers state foundations.
What a year abroad costs: a UK example. These are the UK government's own rules for a Student visa, checked on 23 October 2026:
| Cost | Amount |
|---|---|
| Visa application from outside the UK | £558[10] |
| Immigration health surcharge for students | £776 a year[11] |
| Living costs you must show, London | £1,529 a month, for up to nine months[5] |
| Living costs you must show, outside London | £1,171 a month, for up to nine months[5] |
| Course fees | One academic year, as stated by the university[5] |
By our own sum, nine months at the London rate is £13,761 before tuition, flights or a deposit. That is the amount the visa rules ask you to prove you have, not a full budget, and the figures change when the UK updates them. Other countries set their own rules, so check each government's official visa page and convert at the rate on the day you plan.
Exchanges. A semester abroad during a Malaysian degree is a shorter way to study overseas. Ask the international office of each university you apply to whether it runs exchanges, for how long, and who pays.
The money, briefly
Pay in this area depends on the industry, not on the word "international": hospitality, logistics and finance pay very differently. The money in Global Opportunities has what new services and business graduates earned in 2025, with sources, and First salaries by career area compares every area.
How AI is changing it
Written translation and routine booking are the tasks AI is changing most here, while hosting guests, guiding groups and negotiating face to face are changing least. AI and the future of Global Opportunities goes through the evidence task by task, including how to use AI honestly in scholarship applications.
Try it now
Before First Move. Take Professional Writing, a free 1-hour Mereka Academy course on clear writing that helps with application emails and statements.[12][13] Start a folder with scanned copies of your IC, birth certificate and school documents, as the scholarships guide suggests.
During First Move. On Day 2, choose the Global Opportunities taster: your team advises Daniel, a fictional SPM leaver, by mapping three study routes from the library's route guides, with a source and date for every figure, then drafts a 150-word scholarship statement for him and checks that AI did not invent anything. If your cohort runs four labs, read the People and Society lab brief. Pick three questions from Questions for a practitioner: People and Society, such as asking someone who studied abroad what they wish they had known.
After First Move. Try Speak with Impact, a free Mereka Academy course of about 10 hours on speaking, storytelling and pitching, useful for scholarship interviews.[14][15] Free courses for each career area has the full list.
What this means for you
- You can start an international career without leaving Malaysia. Hotels, tour operators and exporters hire here, and the certificate and diploma routes above lead to those jobs.
- Study abroad usually means either a sponsor, with very high grade bars and conditions such as a convertible loan or a bond, or your family's money. Know which one you are planning for.
- Count the whole cost: fees, the living costs visa rules require, visa and health charges, and flights. A cost you cannot find is unknown, not zero.
- Languages are part of the work here. A language you can actually work in opens doors, and JPA even gives priority to good Mandarin for sponsorship to China.
- Nobody can promise you a place or a scholarship. Be wary of anyone who charges to guarantee one.
Your next step
- Open JPA's sponsorship portal(opens in a new tab) and read the PPN and JKPJ pages. Write down the grades and age rule you would need to meet, then compare the other schemes in the scholarships guide.
- If hotels or tourism appeal, search UP_TVET(opens in a new tab) for "hotel" or "pelancongan" before applications for the January 2027 intake close on 16 November 2026, and note two programmes near you.[16]
Try a course after First Move
Choose one course above. Before your 30-day check-in, try the first section and save one learning example in Future Map. At your 90-day check-in, decide whether to continue or switch. Read the course guide for access, age and availability notes.
