Business & Enterprise after SPM: the work, the routes in and how to try it

Key facts

  • A polytechnic diploma is one way in straight after SPM. Politeknik Hulu Terengganu's Diploma in Accountancy asks for SPM credits in Mathematics and two other subjects, and passes in BM, Sejarah and English.[1]
  • KPM's matrikulasi Accounting stream takes one year and asks for at least C in BM, English and Mathematics, a pass in Sejarah and C in three more listed subjects.[2]
  • UMK's Bachelor of Entrepreneurship (2u2i) runs for 8 semesters: two years at university, one year learning in industry and one year running your own business.[3]
  • Registering a business with SSM costs RM30 a year in your own name, and the owner must be 18 or older.[4]
  • If you work for yourself, PERKESO runs a separate scheme that covers self-employed Malaysians against injuries at work.[5]

Business & Enterprise is the area of corporate jobs, small and medium businesses (SMEs) and ventures you start yourself. First Move shows you how each of those hires, pays and grows people. This guide covers what the work looks like in a normal week, the routes in after SPM, and how to test your interest before you choose.

For named programmes, the institutions that run them and who funds each route, see Where to study Business & Enterprise in Malaysia, and who funds it.

What the work actually is

A job title tells you little. What matters is the tasks you would do on a Tuesday afternoon, so here are common roles described that way. See Tasks, not job titles for how to break any job down like this, and ask a practitioner to correct the list.

  • Accounts assistant. Keys in invoices and receipts, matches them against the bank statement, chases customers who have not paid and prepares the figures for month end. A common first job after an accounting certificate or diploma.
  • Sales executive. Calls or visits customers, prepares quotations, follows up until a deal closes and keeps the sales records up to date. Part of the pay is often commission.
  • Retail or outlet supervisor. Opens and closes the shop, plans staff shifts, counts stock, handles complaints and reports the day's sales. Many people reach this by starting on the shop floor.
  • Operations or logistics coordinator. Plans deliveries, tracks orders, sorts out delays with suppliers and drivers, and keeps the spreadsheet everyone else relies on.
  • Customer service executive. Answers chats, calls and emails, solves problems or passes them to the right person, and logs every case.
  • Digital marketing executive. Plans and posts content, runs small online adverts, reads the numbers each week and suggests what to change.
  • HR assistant. Posts job adverts, books interviews, keeps leave and attendance records and prepares data for the monthly payroll.
  • Business analyst. Pulls sales or operations data, builds reports and turns them into a recommendation a manager can act on.
  • Founder or freelancer. Does a little of everything above: finds customers, sets prices, delivers the work, keeps the records and pays the bills.

In a large company these tasks are split across teams. In a small business one person may do four of them before lunch. That difference shapes your first job more than the title does, so ask about it.

Routes in after SPM

There is no single route, and each one opens different first jobs. Entry rules change every year and differ by programme, so treat this table as examples and check the official page for your intake.

RouteWhat it asks for (examples)How long
Apprenticeship (SLDN): you train mostly at a companySPM or PMR leavers, shortlisted by the employer[6]1 to 2 years[6]
Certificate at a community college2026/27 general rule: 1 SPM credit and a pass in BM and Sejarah[7]Check the course
Polytechnic diploma, e.g. Diploma in Accountancy at Politeknik Hulu TerengganuCredits in Mathematics and two other subjects; passes in BM, Sejarah and English[1]3 years, including a semester of industrial training[1]

Form 6 or matrikulasi, then UMK's Bachelor of Entrepreneurship (2u2i) through UPUCGPA 2.00 in STPM or matrikulasi/asasi, at least E in SPM Mathematics and English, MUET Band 2.0, and a test or interview[3]8 semesters after pre-university[3]
Work, or start a businessNo entry rule to start selling; registering with SSM needs you to be 18[4]Your choice

For 2026/27, the general rule for a polytechnic or community college diploma was 3 SPM credits and a pass in BM and Sejarah; individual programmes such as the accountancy diploma add their own subjects.[7] After matrikulasi you apply for a degree through UPUOnline in your stream's category, which for Accounting is P.[8] If you are set on becoming a qualified accountant, know that the bar can be high: KPM's Professional Accounting matrikulasi stream, run with ACCA and UiTM, asks for an A in Mathematics and A- in English, among other grades.[2]

Starting a business or freelancing: the honest version

Running your own thing teaches selling, money and people skills fast. It also moves every risk onto you.

  • You can test before you are 18, but not register. SSM's EzBiz Online registers a business for RM30 a year in your own name or RM60 a year with a trade name, and the owner must be 18 or older and a Malaysian citizen or permanent resident.[4] At 17 you can still test an idea with a few real customers, with a parent involved.
  • No employer is protecting you. Nobody pays into EPF or SOCSO for you. PERKESO's Self-Employment Social Security Scheme covers Malaysian citizens and permanent residents who work for themselves against injuries at work and occupational diseases. It covers 20 sectors, it is compulsory for taxi, e-hailing and bus drivers, and you register through PERKESO's Prihatin app or website.[5]
  • Income is uneven. Some months pay well and some pay nothing. Keep a record of every sale and cost from day one, and do not spend savings before customers have paid you.
  • Freelance platforms set their own rules. Each one has its own minimum age and payment terms. Read them with a parent before you sign up, and never pay anyone who promises to "guarantee" you clients.

The money, briefly

Pay in this area depends heavily on the kind of role: sales jobs often add commission, and a new business may earn little at first. For what new graduates actually earned, with sources, read The money in Business & Enterprise and First salaries by career area.

How AI is changing it

AI tools already draft emails, sort invoices and summarise sales data, so entry-level work is moving from doing routine tasks to checking them. Selling, negotiating and judging what a customer really needs still lean on people, and AI and the future of Business and Enterprise work sets out the evidence task by task.

Try it now

Before First Move. Pick one role from the list above and X-ray it with the job X-ray kit: list its tasks and mark which ones you would enjoy.

On Day 2. If your cohort runs a taster for each career area, choose the Business and Enterprise taster, "an offer and a price". Your team builds an offer and a price for a made-up home baker from her cost sheet, checks the AI's sums yourselves, and pitches to a practitioner who plays the baker. If your cohort runs four labs instead, the People and Society and Design and Create labs are the closest. Take questions from the Design and Create question bank or the People and Society question bank to the practitioner conversations.

What this means for you

  • You can enter this area through an apprenticeship, a certificate, a diploma, a job or a degree. The degree routes lead more often to analyst and management roles, so pick the route that fits the first job you want.
  • If you like numbers, an accounting diploma or the matrikulasi Accounting stream are concrete routes. Check the Mathematics grade each one asks for against your expected SPM results.
  • Starting a business at 17 works as a test, not as a plan to live on. Registration waits until you are 18, and you carry your own social security.
  • Big companies and small businesses split the work very differently. Ask any employer what a normal week looks like before you accept.

Your next step

  1. Choose one role from the list and ask a practitioner on Day 2, or a relative who works in business, "What did you actually do last Tuesday?" Use the question bank for follow-ups.
  2. Open one official page from the table, such as the UMK entry requirements book(opens in a new tab) or SSM EzBiz(opens in a new tab), and write down what you would need.

Choose one course above. Before your 30-day check-in, try the first section and save one learning example in Future Map. At your 90-day check-in, decide whether to continue or switch. Read the course guide for access, age and availability notes.
